Abstract

In a context where work practices and IS get constantly misaligned, research on the psychological aspects of IT use is becoming increasingly relevant. This paper examines the impacts of techno-uncertainty, one of the main factors in technostress, on health information system  use. More specifically, we propose and test a serial mediation model of the impact of techno-uncertainty on HIS exploratory use. Our model suggests that such impact unfolds via HIS perceived usefulness and HIS exploitative use. Tests of mediation from 301 caregivers provides support for our model. In an effort to help healthcare institutions to improve the use of HIS, our findings help to open the black box of the mechanisms through which techno-uncertainty impacts HIS exploratory use including the role of experience in systems characteristics’ appraisal. In doing so, this study contributes to recent findings on technostress which highlight the possible positive effects of technostress, and calls for studying the role of specific techno-stressors in specific contexts.
