Commoning with blockchain. The ?1 libre currency/Duniter case

Abstract

The rise of the Internet and peer-to-peer networks have fostered the formation of communities around new collective projects that bring Ostrom’s (1990) work on the commons back to the forefront. From this perspective, a new field of specific research suggests that blockchain technology can support commons governance. Studies are still rare and remain very theoretical. The objective of this article is to study the actual use of this technology in the process of commoning. To do so, this paper relies on the case study of the ?1, a French free/libre cryptocurrency. Our results detail the governance arrangements of a new type of commons developed by members of the ?1 libre currency; the socio-technical system of money creation. In doing so, this case highlights the attributes of the Duniter blockchain specifically developed for the needs of the ?1 ecosystem. It also outlines the role of the blockchain in supporting self-organization and the bundles of rights that members have put in place to allocate the universal dividend.

Maxime Malafosse est Doctorant en Sciences de Gestion à Aix-Marseille Université, Faculté d’Économie et de Gestion depuis 2018. Spécialisé en Management des Systèmes d’Information, il travaille sous la codirection d’Amandine Pascal, LEST/CNRS, Laboratoire d’Économie et de Sociologie du Travail et de Serge Amabile, CERGAM, Centre d’Études et de Recherche en Gestion d’Aix-Marseille. Sa thèse articule deux concepts clés : les communs et la blockchain.

Amandine Pascal est Professeur agrégée des Universités en Sciences de Gestion à Aix Marseille Université. Elle est membre du Laboratoire d’Economie et de Sociologie du Travail (LEST-UMR 7317) au sein duquel elle développe ses travaux dédiés au management des systèmes d’information, à la transformation digitale et leurs influences sur le travail. Ses recherches portent également sur les méthodologies de design science, le lien épistémologie-méthodologie et sur les usages et trajectoires d’appropriation des technologies numériques. Ses recherches ont été notamment publiées dans British Journal of Management, Systèmes d’Information et Management, International Journal of Business Information Systems. Elle a également dirigé et participé à de nombreux projets de recherche à la fois à destination d’entreprises et d’organisations publiques.

Serge Amabile est Professeur des Universités à la Faculté d’Economie et de Gestion d’Aix Marseille Université. Dans cette institution, il est Vice-Président en charge du Numérique et Directeur adjoint du CERGAM (Centre d’Études et de Recherche en Gestion d’Aix-Marseille). Ses thèmes de recherche portent principalement sur la transformation digitale des entreprises et des organisations et l’ingénierie des systèmes d’information d’aide à la décision. Ses principaux résultats ont été publiés dans Systèmes d’Information et Management, International Journal of Technology and Human Interaction, Management International, International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business ou, encore, Finance, Contrôle, Stratégie.
