Abstract

An approach dedicated to the analysis of the value of information derived from remote sensing GIS necessitates the analysis of the specific competitive advantage of such an information. This paper considers the problem of remote sensing GIS' value, on the basis of a Cost benefit analysis (CBA). This approach has been applied to a specific case study : the modelling of tropical deforestation. In this case study, the main advantages of the remote sensing-based information system came notably from an improvement of decision making and avoidance of bad decisions, as the rate of project failure, and the associated resource wastes, was expected to decrease as a result of the availability of more accurate information to support the decision-making process. Data estimates for this case study showed that, under a number of realistic assumptions, the ratio of benefits to costs was high. More generally, the approach developed appears as potentially generalisable to three generic categories of remote sensing projects and applications (private, public with short-term implications and public with long-term implications).
