Strengthening Critical Perspectives: A Call for Greater Openness in Information Systems Management

Abstract

This editorial is a call to the IS community to mobilize critical perspectives. To this end, this editorial presents the theoretical and conceptual origins of critical perspectives as well as their evolution in IS. Drawing on recent and diverse articles in the literature, the authors argue for the relevance of critical perspectives in illuminating current issues in IS.

Sylvie Michel, University of Bordeaux, IRGO, Bordeaux, France

Sylvie MICHEL is a secondary school teacher and associate professor in management sciences at the University of Bordeaux (IRGO). Her research focuses on the major ethical issues raised by information systems, AI, and robotics. She also works on humanitarian logistics and the role of IS in the search for resilience and even plasticity. She takes a critical approach, drawing on interdisciplinarity to address these issues.

Lise Arena, Université Côte d’Azur, CNRS, GREDEG, Nice, France

Lise Arena is Full Professor in Management Information Systems at Université Côte d’Azur (France) and a member of GREDEG (CNRS UMR 7321). Her research focuses on digital transformation and the socio-historical analysis of information systems and innovation, with particular attention to platforms, blockchain, and generative AI. She adopts longitudinal and interdisciplinary approaches, combining management studies with historical and critical perspectives.

Sophie Agulhon, Aix-Marseille University, CERGAM, Aix-en-Provence, France

Sophie Agulhon is Full Professor of Management Sciences – Information Systems Management at Aix-Marseille University, affiliated with CERGAM in the E2I research area. Previously Assistant Professor at Paris 8 University, LED. She specializes in industrial and information technology risk management. She also interested in the history of management thinking, education, and training.

Roxana Ologeanu-Taddei, MRM, Univ Montpellier, Montpellier, France

I am an associate professor at Montpellier University, in France. My research focuses on digital transformation especially in hospitals. My recent research explores ethical issues of AI and environmental sustainability related to digital technologies design and use. My work has been published in medical journals as well as in information systems journals including European Journal of Information Systems, Information Systems Journal, and Journal for the Association of Information Systems
