Abstract

Since the mid-eighties, many large organizations deployed centralized and specialized competitive intelligence units. Inspired from governmental intelligence models and experiences, these structures transfered administrative dysfunctionalities to the corporate arena. Through the centralization and overspecialization of critical sensemaking and noticing organizational activities, large organisations institutionalize already dysfunctional informational behaviors. The article ends with a series of propositions aiming at explaining and resorbing such dysfunctioning. Alternative designs and practices are finally discussed.
