Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor under evaluation at another journal. The journal asks for the article exclusivity: the same article cannot be submitted simultaneously to different journals. When authors submit a paper to SIM, they must disclose in their cover letter all closely related papers that they have written in journals, as book chapters, or as papers in conference proceedings. Similarly, if authors submit a paper on a closely related topic to another journal subsequent to their submission to SIM, they must immediately notify the editor responsible for their SIM submission. Failure to abide by these guidelines can result in paper being withdrawn.
  • All authors of the article submitted have significantly contributed to the research. Authorship requires taking accountability for content, consenting to publication, giving contractual assurances about the integrity of the work. These are uniquely human responsibilities that cannot be undertaken by Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI), such as ChatGPT. Therefore, LLM and Gen AI tools must not be listed as an author.
  • Where authors use Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) or other AI tools as a tool in their research design and research execution (Conceptualization, Synthesis, Theorization, Definitions, Structuring, Literature review, Data collection, Data Processing, Data analysis and interpretation, ...) their use must be acknowledged and documented appropriately in the Methodological section of the article. Where authors use Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) or other AI tools in the article writing process, these tools should only be used to improve readability and language of the work, and their use must be acknowledged and documented appropriately in the Declaration of Generative Artificial Intelligence technologies, placed between the Conclusions section and the reference list. This "Declaration of Generative Artificial Intelligence technologies" in the writing process should state: "During the preparation of this work, the author(s) used [TOOL NAME / SERVICE] in order to [RATIONALE]. After using this tool/service, the author(s) have revised and edited the content as necessary and assume(s) full responsibility for the content of the publication.". Where authors do not use at all Large Language Models (LLMs), Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) or other AI tools in the article, the authors should state in the "Declaration of Generative Artificial Intelligence technologies": "During the preparation of this work the author(s) did not use any Large Language Model (LLM), Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) or other AI tools".
  • All authors of the article submitted commit themselves to participating in the peer review process of at least three other works submitted by other authors.
  • The article respects the copyrights of the sources used and cited (e.g. figures, tables, photographs, illustrations, trade literature and data). Authors are required to certify that they have the right to use the data and publish the research results contained in the manuscript. This includes data that may be collected from public sources (such as open web sites). When data are collected from public sources, they should not violate the fair use policy of the data owner such as the web site. In the cases where corporate or other legal permissions are required to use the data or the results derived from the data, these must be obtained before submitting the manuscript for review. Any violation of the data provenance will result in withdrawal of the manuscript from SIM (even after acceptance, retroactively).
  • All authors commit themselves to provide retractions or correction of mistakes.
  • The article and the cover letter are written in French or English. Title, keywords and abstract should be written in French and in English. The evaluation process will take place in the language of the article, and the article will be published in its original language. If the article is accepted by the editorial board, a translated version in the other language can be published alongside the original version. The authors must signal their willingness to publish a translated version when they receive the notification of the acceptance of their article. The authors are in charge of the costs and the quality check of this translation. Any submission in English by non-native English speakers will have to be professionally copy-edited at authors’ cost before final acceptance. No other fee or charge will be required from authors for manuscript processing and/or publishing.
  • Any financial support will have to be notified.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements of the Journal, detailed in the template file to be used as stylesheet.
  • All submitted files are in Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer document file formats (.doc, .docx, .odt).
  • All submitted files (excepted the cover letter) are anonymous (no name of the authors in the article nor in the file properties).
  • Authors must submit their complete list of references cited in their article in the form of a bibliographic file (.ris or bibtex formats), separate from and complementary to the list of references included in the article. A free and open solution to create this file is with the Zotero application (https://www.zotero.org/) or its online service dedicated to creating bibliographies (https://zbib.org/).
  • The mini-biography of each author can be written in French or English. It has to be uploaded in the dedicated text box “Bio Statement” of the contributor profile of each author when clicking on “Add Contributor” during submission.
  • Authors must fully subscribe and respect the ethical guidelines of this journal. Submissions that do not comply to any of these guidelines will be rejected and returned to their authors. Serious breaches of the ethical principles and of the scientific integrity can result in authors’ ban from further submissions to SIM, publication of a retraction notice for previous publications in SIM, expulsion from the AIM academic association, legal action against authors, and hence potentially fatal damage to authors academic reputation.

Author Guidelines

Download here the template file to be used as a stylesheet for the article.

Download here the canvas for the cover letter of the article.

Download here the agreement granting the right on a non-exclusive basis to publish to submit with the article.

At the time of submission, authors are invited to submit the associated data wherever possible, or to make such data available in an open-access repository. We also invite authors to indicate, in the cover letter, their justified preferences in terms of editors and reviewers for the evaluation of their submission. The proposed editor should be an actual member of the editorial board of SIM. To avoid potential conflicts of interest, reviewers should not: (1) have co-signed publications during the last five years with the authors of the submission, (2) be members of the same academic institution of the authors of the submission, (3) have any hierarchical or supervisory relationship with the authors of the submission, (4) be currently working on a research project with the authors of the submission.

The title and abstract must inform the reader about the article's contents. The editorial board reserves the right to change the title and abstract proposed by the author after consulting him/her.

We ask the authors to take care of the abstract and to give a clear and explicit description of the following items: (a) the research question your deal with in your paper, (b) the research approach or method adopted by the authors, (c)  the theoretical contribution brought by the paper, (d) the relevance of the research and the implications for practitioners; and (e) the major originality of the research and the methodological, theoretical and/or practical innovation of your contribution.

In its introduction, the article has to explain its interest to all the readers. The conclusion should sum up the results and implications. Reference to prior works should not be overdone - most of the text should be devoted to the original contribution of the article. The author should be clear, with tables and figures included where they help understanding. The editorial board may adapt the style of the article to that of the journal.

At the end of the article, there should be :
  • The CRediT author statement (only after the acceptance of the article for publication);
  • The "Declaration of generative artificial intelligence technologies" in the writing process;
  • The bibliographical references;
  • The appendices (methodological or other) should be referred to by letters (A, B, etc.).

Submission of a revised manuscript - New version after review

When submitting a revised version of your manuscript following the reviewers' feedback, please make sure to follow these steps carefully:

  • Upload the new version of your manuscript that incorporates the requested revisions.
  • Attach a response letter to the reviewers detailing your answers to each of their comments.
  • Ensure that the submitted manuscript file is fully anonymized, in accordance with the journal's guidelines.

To assist you in this process, this instructional video will guide you step by step through the submission of a revised manuscript on our platform.

Watch the video here.

We strongly recommend watching it before submitting your revised manuscript, to avoid any omissions or technical errors.

Empirical Research Article

In the "Empirical Research Article" section, articles should be built on solid theoretical frameworks and methodological foundations to propose original and significant contributions to information systems management. As the main section of the journal, the articles that do not fit with any of the specific sections listed below, should be submitted in this section.

The maximum length is 30 pages (applying the journal stylesheet template, reference list, and appendix included). Supplementary (beyond the 30-page paper format) appendix exclusively online is possible.

Teaching case studies

Guidelines to submission to the section "teaching case studies" are available in the attached pdf file

Sylvie MICHEL <sylvie.michel@u-bordeaux.fr> is the first contact editor for this section.

Opinions

The "Opinions" section aims to present an opinion, discuss a paradox or forecast issues likely to be of interest to our community. Articles in this section should either initiate reflection, or even debate, within our community, or open up new areas of discussion, close down outdated areas and/or offer fresh perspectives on research topics of importance to the discipline. These opinions must be clearly argued and rigorously constructed, and/or relying on scholarly evidence and will be subject to the usual evaluation process. They serve a purpose, or address a clear objective important in IS.
The evaluators and the editorial board will be careful to maintain a high standard for these articles, which will be expected to present the proposed issue clearly, give a rigorous conceptual framework, develop the chosen argumentation, describe the implications and any empirical evidence.
More precisely, an opinions article should:
• Identify and explain the objective(s) (paradox/topic/issue(s)/challenges) that the paper aims to address in clear and accessible terms.
• Provide appropriate conceptual frameworks for the paradox/topic/issue(s)/ challenges.
• Offer opinions and supportive arguments.
• Describe the implications of these opinions to research, practice, and/or education.
• Where appropriate, include empirical evidence and the method used.
Opinion papers may be shorter than empirical research papers and must not exceed 30 pages in length (applying the journal stylesheet template). Supplementary appendix exclusively online is possible.

Stéphanie MISSONIER <stephanie.missonier@unil.ch> is the first contact editor for this section.

Methodology research

The "Research methods" section welcomes articles that make significant methodological contributions to information systems research, whatever the research type (qualitative, quantitative, design research…). Articles submitted under this section should discuss the conditions of application, limitations and opportunities of tried-and-tested methods, or propose innovative extensions, adaptations, improvements, or combinations of these methods. Particular attention will be paid to the logical and documented articulation of arguments to extract a methodological contribution to help researchers mobilize the method discussed to conduct their own research. Articles that apply tried-and-tested research methods empirically should be submitted to the “Empirical research article” section, unless the primary focus of these articles is to test and improve the methods.

The maximum length is 30 pages (applying the journal stylesheet template). Supplementary appendix exclusively online is possible.

Nicolas PRAT <prat@essec.edu> is the first contact editor for this section.

Theory development

This section is for conceptual articles that develop novel theories and generate theoretical insights that advance the study and practice of IS design, use and management. This section includes also Theory-Generative Research Synthesis, such as literature reviews.

The maximum length is 30 pages (applying the journal stylesheet template). Supplementary appendix exclusively online is possible.
